Children of Men.


Children of men is set in 2027 and is about the human race dying out, nobody has been born for 18 years causing the population to decrease rapidly.

Camera angles and movement.
The film opening jumps straight in with a high angle shot of a room full of people watching a television broadcast, this shot last from (0.55-1.16) this angle is used for effect on the viewer as it makes the room look more packed with people, with the high angle shot you can also see the facial expressions of each individual and all of their costumes+ make up. The next shot is the close up of the TV that the people are watching this is used to show the viewer what the people are looking at and why it is so important. It then goes back to the high angle shot and a tracking shot is used after to follow the main character out of the shop, the camera follows the character in a POV shot like there is a person behind him following him from (1.13-2.13). This shot is used to show the viewer the surroundings and get an idea of what the character is doing from another persons perspective. The camera shots and movement in this opening is very intriguing as the camera acts as a person in a POV shot going about their lives after 1.13 up until the end.
Editing.
The editing in this film opening is quite slow and casual, there is hardly any cuts in the opening it is all free flowing. From 1.13 up until the end there is no editing required, however at the start there is the title sequence which requires some editing.
Mise en scene.
Props- there are many props in this opening including cars, coffee cups, newspapers and TV's this is because the opening is set in a city and needs to look realistic.
Lighting-the lighting in the opening is dark for the title sequences however then changes to light to mimic city life.
Sound- A lot of diegetic sound is used in this opening to create a realistic city environment, for example engine sounds, horns and of course sound effects such as the explosion at the end of the opening. There is also a voice over of a news broadcast at the start and there is speech from one of the characters.
Costume- The costumes in this opening are casual clothes, mainly winter clothes to show how cold London is and also police costumes.
Setting- the setting of the opening is in a crowded coffee shop, then it ventures out of the coffee shop and onto the streets of London.
Expression- There are many facial expressions in the opening, in the coffee shop there are concerned, emotional and quite serious faces.
Make up- Make up is used in the ending to show the woman in the explosion being covered in smoke and to make her look injured.
Setting up the enigma.
The opening sets up enigma very well the viewer will ask many question as to why are the people are so concerned, why was there an explosion and many more. The film opening made me want to watch on to see what will come next and what caused the events that occurred.

Overall the film opening did a fantastic job of setting up enigma and it really made me want to watch on, this is what I want my opening to do, I want it to attract the viewer and make them keep watching.
