Genre research - Post- Apocalyptic.

Post- Apocalyptic is a genre of a movie. It is basically the after math of a terrible event such as a natural disaster or a nucluer war. I will be researching different film openings to get ideas to use in my final video.

One of the first movie's that came to mind was The Day Ater Tomorrow...
Unfortunatly I couldn't find the opening scenes of the movie however I did manage to find the trailer which I can pick ideas and make notes on.

Firstly, if you don't know what The Day After Tomorrow movie is about then it is basically a post-apocalyptic movie about a natural disaster where a tsunami hits new york city. The events that follow are action packed with civilians trying to fight for survival and survive the harsh weather and conditions.
Ediditng.
Editing is used very well in this trailer becuase it displays the action and pace of the movie. The editing is slow at the start to build suspense and then goes into fast paced quick cutting between scenes. We however would not use this in our opening becuase it is not suited to an opening only a trailer.
Camera Shots and Angles.
Many camera shots and angles are used in this trailer for effect on the viewer. For example straight away in the first scene a establishing shot is used showing the polar ice caps relating to the tsunami in this movie and the cause of the natural disaster. Following on from this there is another establishing shot linked to the first one represtenting that becuase of the polar ice caps melting this is then going to cause the tsunami in new york city, this gives the viewer a sense of what is to come. Camera shaking is also used for effect on the viewer as it seems like it is a real perosn recording the destruction.
Credits.
As you can see at the start of the trailer there is the opening credits whichg include the studios that make the film, in this case it was 20th centuary fox. We will include a studio in our film, however we will probably create our own studio such as J.Wallace productions for example.
Text.
Immediatly after bright text enters that is suited to the film, usually in post-apocalyptic films it is about the disaster for example in this clip is states "10,000 years ago" refering to the last time earth had a disaster of this scale. We could use this in our opening to grab the audiences attention and also give them a hint to what the movie will intail. If we are going to include titles like this we need to take into consideration the font of the text and colour as it play's an important role in how the film loooks, for example if you have a film about winter is would look good to have frosty effects on the text and also have it white to fit with the genre.
New Ideas.
The next scene includes various amounts of news reports about the disaster, this is quite common in post-apocalyptic movies as it would be broadcasted globally if something like that happened. We could include news broadcasts in our film as it would fit well with the genre and if added the audience would automatically know that it was a disaster becuase of a news broadcast. Furthermore it would also make our opening look more realistic and authentic.
Lighting.
The lighting in this trailer is very dark, we could add this to our opening scene as it fits very well with the genre and dark mood of the film. Sadness and distress is a huge part is post-apocalyptic films and dark lighting shows this. If we added dark lighting to our opeining it would make it more intense for the viewer and more mysterious.

Overall I have gained some new ideas from the trailer that we could potentially add to our movie opening, this gernre seems promising and I could easily make a opening for this genre however this is a trailer so most of this would not be suited to our opening but I did pick up a few ideas we could encouperate.
